When I was younger, real estate investing was something that my dad and uncles loved to talk about at every family gathering. Their generation dabbled in 1-4 unit residential investing for passive income. I would listen in on their conversations and became very intrigued in the idea of making money while I slept.
I attended the University of California in Irvine and double majored in Business Economics and International Studies. While in school, I attempted following in my family’s footsteps by buying an investment home. That did not work because I was a full-time student with only a part-time job. My credit profile was insufficient to get a mortgage in a post Great Financial Crisis world. I viewed this failure as a dream deferred, keeping in mind that seed for passive investments. I graduated with cum laude honors and finished two quarters early to save on tuition – December 2010.
Post-undergrad I spent 2011 gaining international experience. I worked as a research consultant in Cape Town, South Africa in the first half of 2011 and then a financial analyst in Shanghai, China in the second half of 2011. A theme in my life has been to work for companies where I want to learn something specific. Something specific that I can put into practice for myself.
When I returned to America in 2012, I became a mortgage loan originator at a boutique residential financing firm to learn everything about the home-buying process. I worked there for three years, rising up the ranks to manage a team of six other loan originators and accomplishing my dream by buying an investment property in Houston, TX. I was blessed and very grateful to have reached the summit of this hypothetical mountain for me. I needed a new challenge.
That challenge and opportunity presented itself in the form of higher education. I was fortunately accepted into two graduate programs at the University of Southern California: Master of Business Administration and Master of Real Estate Development. Between 2014-2016 I pursued both master degrees separately and full-time. The Trojan network helped connect me with various real estate professionals so I leveraged that network to help me transition into commercial real estate.
For the next three years after graduation, I worked for a national CRE capital markets advising firm and trained directly under one of their founders. That incredible experience helped me to quickly bridge the gap between my residential real estate background and my commercial real estate passion. I was a sponge that tried to soak in as much of his 30+ years of knowledge as best as I could.
Typical for my millennial generation, after three years I became curious as to what other opportunities existed for me. A close friend from my master of real estate development program suggested I speak to a NYC-based capital advisory firm called StackSource. He knew them well and thought that I would be a great fit. StackSource is a tech-enabled commercial real estate advisory firm that helps investors and developers access capital nationwide through our interactive online platform. We are a team of technologists and real estate finance experts that have come together to redefine the expectations of what it means to arrange financing of commercial property investments.
I am StackSource’s Director of Capital Markets which means that (1) I help my clients obtain CRE capital, (2) I manage our national lender database, and (3) I contribute to the strategic vision of our firm. StackSource is the future of CRE capital market financing and I am excited to help bring our part of this industry into the digital era.
